Having served local primary and secondary school pupils for over 8 years our Academic Support service has recently been awarded Established Status from QISS (Quality In Study Support), which recognises us as a centre of excellence.
The centre is staffed by experienced tutors and university student volunteers who are on hand to offer support to the pupils. The site offers a library of study resources including fiction and reference books, as well as a computer suite for children to use educational software and the internet, including wireless technology. A new Learning Centre will be available from June for students in Year 9 and above.
Academic Support sessions run on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evening. Monday night is specifically for students in Year 7 and above and is open between 4pm and 6pm. This is a great opportunity for pupils to have some ‘quiet time’ to concentrate on school work and use our extensive resources to enhance their studies.
Asked to comment on Academic Support, one secondary school pupil said, "I tell all my friends to come as you get everything you need in education, like help with your coursework."
The remainder of the week caters for both KS2 and KS3 pupils, and times have been staggered to cater for an increase in the numbers of pupils attending each session. Pupils aged seven come for an hour between 3.30pm and 4.30 pm. Pupils aged 8-11 attend from 3.30pm until 5.00 pm. (Year 7 and above attend from 4pm until 6pm, as normal)
Describing her experience of Academic Support in 3 words one primary school pupil listed "joyful, happy and content."
